Ireland South Coast

About 5km further south we stopped at another small castle. Following the arrival of the Anglo-Normans in Ireland in 1169, this district was granted to a knight. Subsequently, Fethard Castle was built on this site but that is not what we see here today. This present castle was built in the 1400s by the Bishop of Ferns as a defended residence incorporating some of the features of the previous castle. In the 1600s Fethards Castle passed to members of the Loftus family.
